The fasces is an old traditional symbol of Rome, which is really where western culture begin to spread.

After the split of the empire, the cross became the symbol of western culture for the next 1400 years or so.

Here's Wikipedia's list of important themes and traditions in Western culture. Hopefully this will give you some inspiration. It's quite a broad topic, but things that stand out to me are science, innovation, and political philosophy (especially ideas about individual autonomy, democracy, and free speech).

Find some local artists that focus on local/cultural paintings.

Christianity is really the only thing I can think of that Western cultures have in common. I'm sure there are other things though.

animal furs, and tapestries jump to mind. you could even mount things like weapons if you got creative about it.

Album covers hung like art because often times are. That and the music speaks to the issues and mind set of the time they were created. Plus they will be great conversation starters. "David Bowie rocks! Was Michael Jackson into little boys? Only MaCauley Culkin knows for sure."
