I've been a Remote Control Aircraft flyer for years. I have never ever considered a remote control airplane a "Drone." A drone is an autonomous aircraft that can fly and make decisions on its own. To fly a remote control aircraft takes skill and a lot of practice. And you are mostly flying in circles, landing and taking off, without crashing, if you are lucky! Mistakes are costly and spectacular. We film each other to make fun later. Recently, advances in electronics have made it possible to fly these planes without much skill. Electronic components now stabilize your flight and keep the flight path under control. You don't have to develop skill and learn to fly. All you have to do is squeeze the throttle and point your craft in the direction you want it to go. It will remain stable, not let itself stall and fly true. For us who learned how to fly by stick, rudder, aileron, throttle and instinct it was awesome. This allowed us to do some amazing things, things that just impressed our fellow RC pilots. And that was it. Showing off our skills and competing with each other was our only goal. Unfortunately, the stabilizing electronics made it possible for any moron to fly an airplane that the rest of us had to learn through patience and practice flight. These morons are going out and doing moronic things with these aircraft, model aircraft that they have no idea how to fly. Remote control models. The Main Stream Media has latched on to this phenomena and labeled them "drones." Drones doing dangerous and evil things. And now every RC Pilot who has worked hard to master their hobby are now called terrorists.
TL;DR It's a difficult and challenging hobby. It takes a dedicated and focused individual to master it. Advances in electronics has made it possible for any idiot to fly.

the whole labeling any remote controlled aircraft a drone really irritates the shit out of me and the main stream media is 100% to blame for that
