Maybe it was intended to give young people a start, but with the drastic decrease in production jobs, many people are forced to take minimum wage jobs since there aren't other jobs.
I'd argue that your last thought:
The real problem with this continued push to raise the minimum wage is that it will hurt the very people these low wage jobs were intended to help. An employer who's made to pay higher wages to low skilled workers will perhaps now decide that if they are paying top wages for these positions, they'll demand as a result better qualified and better Educated candidates thus squeezing out and leaving behind the average educated or low educated applicant to fend for themselves once again ,and they will end up feeding at the government trough (welfare, food stamps etc)
is already probably true.
People have to work 2 or more minimum wage jobs to earn enough to survive.
