Hey man beans, tortilla, and chicken is pretty damn cheap in the United States but I digress they are still fucking fat faced and any real hardworking Mexican would be working hard enough to burn off all those extra calories. This fucking goes for the kids too.

They obviously have more of a problem with malnutrition than with calorie deficits.

Thank you! This is so overlooked and it's infuriating. Goddamn! Vegetables are cheap when they're in season. Frozen veg are cheap year round. Take responsibility and learn how to make healthy meals! The Internet is free if you go to a library! You can even use their machines for free!

I'm ranting. Sorry. This shit pisses me off to no end.

I heard an argument earlier today about poor people being fat because they eat out of fear there might not be more food. This seems halfway reasonable, but given that their food supply doesn't seem to be in shortage, why not eat less? Hell, put some excess in storage for later. That ties in with their second argument that junk food lasts longer than healthy food. Eating better may be more expensive in region to region, but eating simply less is cheaper everywhere.

I want to stop for a moment and thank people in last 200 years. Poor people now have problems with obesity, not malnourishment.

First time in the entire human history.

That would require thinking ahead, planning for the future.

Wired, I'm so sorry it was like that for you. I absolutely cannot relate, coming from a family of four, including my parents. We weren't wealthy by any standards, but it was never close to this.

If I may ask, where did you grow up? This story sounds so third worldly to me.

That's really fucked up. I'm glad my kids don't have to face that kind of reality. It's one thing to be in poverty and not have enough (almost impossible in the US), it's another to intentionally withhold food from your hungry kids. It makes me sad that this was your experience.

If someone had a childhood like that, it could lead to binge eating disorder. If there is rarely food in the house, they will eat what they can when they can, so they can gain weight. It's a scarcity that is made worse by hoarding, and it is very hard to break that cycle.

My grandparents are overweight (not by huge amounts, but still) and this is why. For both of them, their parents were working class and struggled with employment for most of their childhoods, so having enough food was difficult at best.

I'm not saying its an excuse, and they don't try to use it as one, but its an explanation for how people who otherwise don't display any of the normal signs of being fat can get that way.
