Does that mean like Hitler, Darth was ultimately. A bad strategist who was too much into large toys that were too complex.

The overriding message of the Star Wars films is that bureaucracy will fuck up everything.
The Republic failed due to shitty bureaucracy. But then the Empire took over, kept the bureaucracy, and as a result managed to fail at being evil. The Emperor was the most powerful Sith Lord in history, he was borderline omniscient, but he couldn't overcome bureaucratic inertia to make Death Stars which didn't suffer from ridiculous design flaws.
Imperial military procurement was such a mess that it's a surprise they never bought any F-35s.

Darth Vader's only goal was an efficient, just form of government. Even if you don't take the Prequels into account, his position was an outside-government "right hand" of the Emperor who's sole job is to get things moving along. He appears to listen to Military Grand Moff Tarkin, but he ignores Imperial Senate rules, attacks Leia's ship and tortures a senator. I would be willing to bet the Emperor said "Vader, go assist Tarkin" meaning he's to do what Tarkin is legally not allowed to do. Vader answers to no one but the Emperor directly, and affords the Emperor a buffer so that he can appear to be abiding by the few legal constraints he still has.
Darth Vader is about absolute rule by an (ideally) perfect ruler. Anything else is just a means to an end.

In Vader's defence, the biggest "failing" here is the two Death Stars, neither of which were his strategy as far as I recall. The Emperor commanded that they be built and sent Vader to oversee completion when things ran behind schedule. Vader wasn't even in control of the Death Star - Grand Moff Tarkin was.

J.J said Jar Jar Binks will not be involved with any of the new films... thats not to say that Darth/Lord Bombad won't be part of the movies :P

I don't blame Darth for half those things. He was serving the Emperor, so the blame should fall with him.
I was thinking about Darth yesterday, was watching some star wars. Is it fair to say he was, after all, the chosen one?
I know he kind of fucked up his path for some 25 years, and his kid looked like the chosen one when all was said and done. But, Darth killed the Emperor. Redeemed?

Definitely. In the end he killed the Emperor and brought balance to the force as was prophesied. A little late for the rest of the Jedi, obviously. But prophesy is fickle like that.
The most interesting thing about the expansion from three to six films was the realisation that the films I'd thought were all about Luke Skywalker actually weren't at all. They were the second half of a set of six films about Anakin Skywalker's fall and redemption.

That's exactly the realization I was having last night, it's awesome

That is true. I wondered why Yoda and crew figured killing the Sith would bring balance. If anything it would do the opposite.

Darth vader was never a good strategist, his role in the empire wasnt as a strategist they had plenty of military commanders he was more like the gestapo chief
in this scene he takes the command to "release him" from the higher ranking military officer
