Yeah that's not working out so far.

But if it's "common knowledge" shouldn't you already know it? It sounds like what you might be thinking of is uncommon knowledge, and you might perhaps just have a set of really smart friends (kudos).
Also, it's common knowledge that the best way to learn "stuff" is to read about what you don't already know :-P

In my case it's probably people being more knowledgeable than me combined with a shitty ability to retain information.

As a kid I put my finger inside a lamp without a lightbulb to see if it was still on, it was...
No revelation beside the obvious one.

Depends, TOS's are considered to be common knowledge, but how many people have read them?

Well, I mostly think that people try to know what they need to know. Knowledge is quite vast nowadays and it's hard for one person to know it all (while it would be quite handy ^^ ). So we in fact limit our knowledge. Also, I don't really think there are things all people have to know. People should know stuff usefull for them and I can't tell if there is any universal set of knowledge all human beigns need to posses. It all depends on situation you are in.

I think common knowledge mostly comes from having your own personal judgement and making a few errors here and there and learning not to repeat them. Unfortunately, some people just do not have any judgement abilities and also lack ability to learn from mistakes. Hence you have dolts that interfere with the rest of our miserable existence in this void planet of apes.
