Interesting point. I don't know that that will hold true over time though. I think the new business model of reddit is to pull in extremely casual users via highly moderated distraction-type subreddits (/r/aww, /r/gifs, /r/pics etc.) and phone apps. There will be a few "serious" subreddits among the defaults so the non-casuals still feel like they're a step above Buzzfeed, but even those "serious" subreddits will be highly curated and censored.
I think the users you're referring to WILL notice, but they will soon be in the minority and moving on/supplementing reddit with other sites.
This opinion is based on nothing other than my own observations and assumptions though. I could be totally wrong.

The default subreddits are total shit and pull the most traffic, but the specific communities with a dedicated userbase are still decent. They're the only thing keeping me on Reddit at this point, honestly.
