The problem is that doing exactly that is what the press is supposed to do.
But they're not doing it, which leaves an obvious vacuum for players in the "international community" to fill. But when they do this, especially when it's Putin, it's instantly dismissed as propaganda by the public, opposing politicians and the media itself, regardless of how factual it is..
