You were correct. Margarine isn't for dipping. Why would anyone put it on a potato is beyond me - some butter or olive oil would work much better as they would actually give some taste to the potato. Margarine is too neutral.
Also, butter does not come in sticks in every part of the world. Where I live, sunflower oil is the default fat used for cooking. Butter and margarine are mostly used as spreads and for cakes.

Oh my God, you must not be from Canada! A few years ago this actually became a thing...I was waitressing at the time, and fatties would order "sides of mayo" with their fries...it was disgusting. Then ranch came along and it got worse.

Mayo is a relatively common dip for fries over here in Europe. Ranch is practically unknown, and I've never heard of anyone dipping them into margarine or butter...

Next thing we'll see are fries being dipped in margarine.
They already do it with mayo.
There's also a few restaurants that I've been to that'll cut melted margarine with hot sauce, and that's their "house" hot sauce. I stopped going because I dont want my hot wings covered in "hot" butter.

Look, I love some butter on my baked potato but there's (for me at least) a specific butter-to-potato ratio and this fat bitch is definitely violating that. Gross.

Brussels vending machine. Yep, fries in mayo.
