There is still a question on whether they really are citizens. It is most definitely not the intended purpose for the 14th amendment.
Even this biased article brings it up:
The matter is not considered 100 percent settled, though. For one, the clause doesn’t directly address illegal immigration. Also, the Supreme Court has never made a specific ruling about a person born to undocumented parents.

The 14th was never meant to apply to foreigners. It was meant to apply to former slaves, born here, who were denied their citizenship rights.

This getting rid of the 14 amendment thing is really problematic. If the state gets to decide who a citizen is and isn't then that means they can later strip that right from someone down the road. This will make getting rid of undesirables based on political stand points more common. Somebody commits a crime or is a suspected of one? Strip them of citizenship and suddenly they have no rights. People wouldn't even know if their citizenship would be revoked because there will be a gag order on it. This is a very slippery slope for so many reasons not even related to the idea of hating on illegals. But I might just be paranoid.
