It is a really good game, the story is really good and touching, the characters are charismatic and the atmosphere is engaging. The game is kinda weird in regards to story elements but that's part of what makes it endearing. Also, the simple yet elegant 2d sprites make it not lose its visual appeal.
Ideally I'd say the best way to play it though is using a GBA flashcart because of some finicky elements of the battle system depending on rhythm which is a bit harder on emulators since they aren't cycle-accurate. It's still possible to kinda get around it though by changing some settings which makes emulator play closer in speed to the real-thing and solves the problem for the most part (making emulator play viable and actually enjoyable).

I played through it for the first time recently and I enjoyed it, but I still thought it was over rated. The story, characters, and atmosphere are great. The battle system on the other hand was extremely frustrating. Each enemy type has its own music, and you have to time your attacks in rhythm with the music. Maybe it was the emulator or maybe I just have no rhythm, but I never got the hang of it. To compensate I had to grind just to scrape by. It almost ruined an otherwise wonderful experience. I've heard that people who are musically inclined have an easier time with it. Despite my frustration, the story made it worth the slog through the battles. I'm not going to ruin that in case you decide to play. Just make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.

Wait, THAT'S how it works? I never got that.
