I played through it for the first time recently and I enjoyed it, but I still thought it was over rated. The story, characters, and atmosphere are great. The battle system on the other hand was extremely frustrating. Each enemy type has its own music, and you have to time your attacks in rhythm with the music. Maybe it was the emulator or maybe I just have no rhythm, but I never got the hang of it. To compensate I had to grind just to scrape by. It almost ruined an otherwise wonderful experience. I've heard that people who are musically inclined have an easier time with it. Despite my frustration, the story made it worth the slog through the battles. I'm not going to ruin that in case you decide to play. Just make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.

Maybe it was the emulator

It is a really good game, the story is really good and touching, the characters are charismatic and the atmosphere is engaging. The game is kinda weird in regards to story elements but that's part of what makes it endearing. Also, the simple yet elegant 2d sprites make it not lose its visual appeal.
Ideally I'd say the best way to play it though is using a GBA flashcart because of some finicky elements of the battle system depending on rhythm which is a bit harder on emulators since they aren't cycle-accurate. It's still possible to kinda get around it though by changing some settings which makes emulator play closer in speed to the real-thing and solves the problem for the most part (making emulator play viable and actually enjoyable).

Yes and no. The game is beyond fantastic. However, there is no official translation, and last time I played the game, there were parts flat out missing. I do not know if this has changed yet(and if it has, please let me know) but I highly doubt Nintendo will ever release an official translation themselves (WHY YOU DO THIS REDGY)

I played the fan-translation and it's was pretty good at least since patch 1.1 (back in 2009). The 1.2 patch released last year also fixed a lot of small things. There's only 3 bugs in the game currently (scroll down to Known Issues), one of which is really rare and the other which is also present on the Japanese game - and none of them are game breaking.
I suggest getting a clean japanese rom and applying the newest patch if you want to try it again.

It's been fan translated by now and is p. great overall. I'd highly recommend it.
