I hate that overpopulation is a subject nobody (with any form of influence) really wants to address. It's a serious problem. It's the root cause of many major issues in the world.
I'm afraid that the reason for this is that the western economy is based on the expectation of constant growth (take the ever growing government loans for example) and changing this would have such a huge impact on, and take a great sacrifice from society, that nobody dares to take the lead on it. But the longer we wait, the harder it's going to be.
I feel like saying I hope I will not be around anymore when the shit hits the fan, but I'm sure that's exactly the mindset that the people with any influence are having right now too...
Ok, so, there's too many people. What can be done about it?
Part of the reason why it's uncomfortable is because the answers are either compulsory sterilization and deliberate culling of population. Who wants to be in charge for either of those lists? Anyone who does want to manage those lists probably shouldn't be trusted at all.
In first world nations, population growth will begin to slow and then populations will begin to shrink naturally if nothing is done about it.
One problem is that the government starts freaking out and starts incentivising having kids, when they should be either doing nothing or incentivising not having kids.

Being able to think of only two possible answers at the moment, doesn't mean the whole issue should be swept under the rug. If everyone is made aware, that at least we can all think of possible solutions and maybe think twice about that 5 kids family wish. That's a big part of the idea. Ignoring a problem is never the solution, but that's what's being done now.
It won't go away by it self (in a nice way). The problem will be inherited by our children, or theirs. Every 12/13 years the world population increases with 1 billion. In '24 we'll be at 8, double of what we were at 1974. In '37 it's expected to be at 9 already. It's not going slow. Meanwhile wildlife has halved since the 70's, just to name a consequence.
