You know, I at first thought this was going to be a shoehorned liberal project, but I find that I don't mind. MLK was a civil rights icon from Georgia, and he should be celebrated.

Totes agree. He stood against a terrible force. Public spaces should be open to all, it was immoral to not allow black taxpayers access to what their dollars earned.

It makes sense to honor his fight for rights next to others who fought for their rights.

He is celebrated. Name a state in the South that doesn't have at least one MLK Blvd. He has multiple statues and monuments scattered throughout the country. By no means do I think this is a bad thing, but he is probably the most honored man in the country if you were to count up all of his statues, memorials, roads, and schools named after him. I do not think Stone Mountain is an appropriate place for another MLK statue. The one in Atlanta is just dandy. The state purchased Stone Mountain to preserve it as a memorial to the Confederacy. It is not a theme park. It's not a rec center. It's a park dedicated to and honoring the Confederacy and the Confederate dead and it is completely inappropriate for a civil rights leader to be honored in a Confederate memorial park.
