Its yet another proxy war in the making. Putin wants neither US nor ISIS agendas served, which is exactly what would happen through inaction on his part.
There's also the appeal (for RU) of having an excuse to roll your tanks into a region and getting a foothold (kinda like America has been doing in the region for all our lifetimes).

They cover irans ass. They stop ISIS taking control of syria. They don't get much out of it, they know assad failing will be even more destabilizing than Iraq.
They have also seen the US bombing campaign for over a year now fail badly

Well, they pretty much saw that every single american action made ISIS and Taliban stronger and stronger.
They killed Saddam falsely accusing him of (never to be found) mass destruction weapons... and made Iraq a land of no one where mercenary and extremists do pretty much all what they like. They destroyed the government of Afghanistan setting up a weak government that is unable to fight Taliban all by itself. They killed Gaddafi, i still have to understand why, and this made Libya just the same of Iraq.
Every single action of the US made ISIS and Taliban stronger and stronger transforming local and circumscribed problems in world wide problems.
Russians are probably just trying to stop America from fucking up just another country and make ISIS and Taliban stronger than what they already are.
What do Russians get in exchange? Safer borders and a safer world where to exist.
Yes, Assad is a piece of shit, just like Saddam and perhaps Gaddafi, but at least they know/knew how to control those crackheads.

what do you think putin will do when he has an insurgent war where 0% of the free population outside the 'green zone' recognizes assads rule? people dont like getting gassed, and they damn sure will fight to the last man until assad is gone. in that respect, it benefits america, but not very much. i'm so happy pres obama is putting this terd into putins hand.

A purchaser for oil. It has been suggested that Assad has been purchasing oil from black market sources. Russia is under US sanctions and needs as many purchasers as possible. Putin is spending money now to make money later.
