My advice would be to plan on getting a good scope, on some good mounts. I anything gets loose it will drive you crazy.

Savage has a good rep these days, and Remington has a bad one. If you have access to a gun show or a large gun store, the used rifle rack is always worth a look.

I'm open on platforms and I'm currently leaning towards .300WM, 7mm Rem and 6.5mm CM

Those are all pretty fancy rounds. The ammo will cost you a bunch. Get a .308 bolt action. Remington 700 action. Get a good scope. Practice.

I was concerned that .308 might not have the punch to drop a mule deer cleanly at the longer ranges
