I actually closed my Prime and then my entire Amazon account last week. One of the main reasons was Amazon not making apps outside of TV or devices I did not care to use. (And mainly just not wanting to use Amazon for purchases any more) I use Chromecast since it is so flexible and ever since Google opened it up with the SDK anyone can provide support in their apps. Amazon doesn't want to make an app for it, but they spin it like Chromecast and Appletv just don't work, in reality Amazon just want people to use their stuff. In hindsight I am glad I did since it seems they're not planning get to support what I want to use.

I don't blame them. Why sell the product if they refuse to make the Amazon app available? It'd be fairly difficult to say Amazon is doing anything wrong when you consider that they sell Roku and a host of generic Android streaming devices alongside their own Fire TV.

So Amazon wants people to use Amazon products? just like Apple and Google want people to buy their respective devices? Seems pretty reasonable.
Maybe Amazon is just disappointed that the new Apple TV doesn't support 4k, Youtube, or Amazon Prime Video.
