By the end of 1993, it became painfully clear to anyone who studied the market numbers that the comics world was starting to shrink. Little did we know, however, that the decline would last for more than a decade, and would eventually reduce the overall unit sales volume of comics by a disastrous 80% from the 1992 peak. That huge decline in overall unit sales inevitably led to a severe consolidation in not only the comics retailing community, but also in the number of publishers and distributors.

They messed around with well-known and loved characters and the fans reject it. Superman dies. Batgirl gets shot by the Joker and is paralyzed to become the Oracle. People (pre-90s) equated Marvel as the place with the superheroes with problems, and DC as the place where the good guys generally won. How does Superman's death show they won? How is a paralyzed Batgirl show they won.

I realize that Batgirl overcame her problems as the Oracle, but it's hard to overcome death. That's why both have come back in their traditional forms. This didn't work well.

good point. DC good lucky in spite of themselves with Batgirl's "conversion" to Oracle.
