That would be painfully quiet...maddening. I could barely spend a few minutes in an anechoic chamber. I could hear my lungs filling/emptying, my blood flowing, and my heartbeat sounded like a bass drum. It was not pleasant.

Oh wow, you've actually tried one of those? How and where? I want to try one, despite it being uncomfortably disturbing lol.

Well i am an automation systems engineer and was installing and wiring a fixture in an anechoic chamber for our client to do characterization of a micro electronic microphone (MEM). It was a small chamber...just large enough for 1 person to be inside. The claustrophobia coupled with the intense pressure of complete silence was disturbing to say the least. I kept having to take breaks just to calm down. It was an experience, but not one i would recommend.

Ok, this is interesting but purely theoretical.

Here is the scientific article.

The writing style is terrible and almost deliberately confusing. Trying to unpick it and get to the thing they have done takes time.

So it seems they are stretching membranes (read as baloon skins) around a frame and sticking a weight at the center. Then they take two of these with carefully calculated proportions and place them back to back with a very specific air gap in between. Lots of maths and a few other minor details determine the overall dimensions of the whole thing.

In their computer simulations this seems to cancel out almost all sound waves. Only simulation though, this hasn't been verified in practice yet.

Think of how many marriages this could save ;)

Came here to say this. It's just noise cancellation scaled up. It's impressive, yeah, but it's not the new meta-material the title is teasing.

It's not going to prevent your downfiring sub from rattling your neighbor's ceiling.

Well, I know what I'm lining my walls with installing in my room now. Come at me guy in the room over with your noise complaints.

It’s a near perfect sound absorption system where sound waves come in and don’t come back out.

So what you're saying is, it is perfect for use in my murder room...

Might be tricky to clean the blood out of the resonators.
