This is a really well written opinion piece. However, one important distinction is that this article focuses primarily on professional bureaucrats while Ms. Davis is an elected official. When and if she runs for office again, her election will be strongly influenced by her opinion on this issue that has made her famous.

If non elected employee has a religious objection to performance of a particular task, and the non-performace of that task has no effect on society, then I have no problem to making special accommodations for that employees.

The article mentions a Muslim employee that didn't want to issue liquor licenses. If issuing liquor licenses weren't his primary job function, (maybe he issues construction permits and food permits too,) and another employee is available to issue a liquor license, I have no problem making an accommodation for that employee to not betray his beliefs.

If that person told applicants for licenses, "come back tomorrow when my colleague works" then I would not support such an accommodation as it affects society.

I agree with the judge in the Kim Davis case. He tried to get a compromise under which she did not have to personally issue the licenses to homosexuals, but allow someone without her religious objections to issue the licenses.
