voat can succeed without taking down reddit. also, voat doesn't have to be as big as reddit to be deemed successful.
I do believe this site needs more user growth, but the most important thing is to keep a loyal user base that contributes frequently, regardless of the scale.
That all depends on your definition of success. As long as Voat provides people with a platform to discuss anything they feel like and manages to avoid most of the larger faults that reddit and other sites have it can be considered a success. As long as people keep participating, keep discussing, keep posting threads, I don't see how it can be considered a failure.
It may never become as large or as financially successful as reddit, but the reddit model is one with serious flaws. As the years go by, these flaws will become more and more evident.

Reddit is too big to fail, just like Digg was. Just like MySpace was. Just like GeoCities was.
The internet is doing exactly what it was designed to do, be a source of uninterruptible, decentralized communications. And websites definitely have a cycle to them.

Why does Reddit have to fail for Voat to be succeeding?

I think a world where both thrive can exist. So far it's shaping up to be two different types of user base. Reddit is more like Facebook these days with the exception of smaller subs and even some of those smaller subs are adopting mod practices that kill the community and openness.

I think the quality of reddit content will gradually decline, with the number of visitors declining after that. I expect reddit to plunge into a dark age of bad content. The future of Voat however looks pretty bright :)

Honestly, I don't think Voat is different enough for most users to switch and many of the same problems that Reddit has, will also show up here. Okay, so supposedly admins here are better, good, but what about subverses moderators? That's the big problem - moderators still have total control over what you're allowed to say. Voat would have a better chance, if it did away with subverses and moderators, in favor of a more free form structure (not saying that I know, what it could be or how that could work).
