800.000 is the upper estimate of how many might come this year to Germany, but of course estimates are difficult. A major reason of the unusually high load on Germany is that other countries (esp. the UK which just made a big ruccus about being so kind to take 5.000 in, but also Poland, etc) refuse to take their share.
But the major question is: What does it mean to take 500.000 a year? Does it mean to house and feed them, or does it mean to have language courses, vocational training, etc. to ensure they can be integrated into society? Most of the current troubles come from a long-standin policy to isolate refugees in Germany - even those with recognised status can't get jobs except through complicated and rare exception procedures. Means many of them are forced to just hang around their accomodation, causing unhappiness on both sides - the refugees (or asylum seekers) are growing increasingly frustrated with boredom and the unability to participate, and the German residents and workers feel threatened by the 'lingering groups' and angry about having 'sustain' them. So if taking 500k a year means to just house them - that's not really sustainable for either them or the locals. Sadly politics is only slowly adjusting to this fact.
