Mars must remain a colony until it can be self-sustaining. At that point it can decide if it's better off being independent, but the local martians might not want either and sabotage any colonization effort with ray guns or battle bots.

The colonizing organization could themselves be your self-governed entity after seceding from Earth. Those who made the tech and time investment to make Mars comfy wouldn't have to remove themselves from Mars, but rather remove themselves from Earth. Those who govern a place should be in that place to be most viscerally connected to its needs and successes. This philosophy would exclude foreign (Earthly) governance.

Well whenever a country tried to do that here, it didn't go well. Look at history, it us the same as going to the new world, except this time it is a new world.

Oops lol Mars is already a registered colony and it's not registered under human control. Humans (homonoids) are required on there due to it's designation. Humans don't 'own' Mars. Actully no one really 'owns' anything and that's half of humanity problem isn't it. But I won't get into that ha ha ha.

If humans go to Mars, someone here on earth will be deciding who goes. (Under current probabilities)

At the moment that's shared between a complex set of political entanglements but basically (ha ha) it could come down to one (currently 26 yr old girl) and a few guys humans would call 'Reptilains'.

You can't imagine how amusing I find that.

The alternating probability still doesn't see any mass migration, migration is decided by the group.

So the upshot is this:

Unless you are currently a registered member of thr group, you are not (exceptional circumstances aside) getting off this planet except in the above cases.

so now look around, what do you see? Notice you are shitting were you eat and all that?

** other probability has some Acturians zipping a few humans to a different place 'far far away' but hey lets not split hairs, the point here is humans currently are not really ready to migrate to the jungle let alone another planet sorry.

Why would we want either planet to be a single political union? I'll be disappointed if mars doesn't end up with more than the pitiful 200 political entities we have.

It will probably need to be a colony at least until it can be self sufficient. At which point, we will discover a new era of space warfare. Which will be awesome. (and awful of course).
