Already my setup: I dual boot into Win 10 with Linux installed on a second HDD. I also need Win 7+ to use software for school, but I want to play older games designed for older Windows versions. I have an unused "storage" partion on my Linux hard drive which I could easily convert into an XP install. Nice thing about a VM though is a slightly less cluttered grub list and hard drive, as well as the ability to copy it to another computer.
Have you tried running those programs in XP Compatibility mode? Do you have Win 10 Pro? I think the lesser versions don't have XP Compatibility mode. It should run anything that ran in XP.

VM will tank your performance. Terraria is on Linux
