Already my setup: I dual boot into Win 10 with Linux installed on a second HDD. I also need Win 7+ to use software for school, but I want to play older games designed for older Windows versions. I have an unused "storage" partion on my Linux hard drive which I could easily convert into an XP install. Nice thing about a VM though is a slightly less cluttered grub list and hard drive, as well as the ability to copy it to another computer.

True. I'd suggest using Linux as your main OS and dual-booting into 7 or XP.
