I write almost daily. Dungeons and Dragons adventures don't write themselves yo.
Some things are easier up on a board or, I prefer, graph paper. But, given that you're still doing it by hand and head, you still in academia? I kind of expected to remain in academia and ended up modeling traffic instead. I am happily retired now, I have been for almost eight years. What field are you in, if you don't mind my asking?

Yesterday.
Writing any kind of information is a good memorization aid. Writing requires your brain to consider the information carefully, translate the information into meaningful scribbles, and transfer the scribbles onto paper.
Peruse any of these articles about handwriting as a memorization aid.
I knew that but I did not know that - if that makes any sense. I've frequently made it a point to write things down that I want to remember. It isn't that I will find the bit of paper later on - it is that I wrote it down and remember it because I wrote it down. It has been one of my key memorization aids since... Wow... Err... Since the mid 1960s. I was pretty young when I learned this about myself. I'd never actually looked to see if studies had been done or anything. I kind of figured everyone did it.

I have a little list of things I need from the store on my table, I just added after-bite to the list (although that's one I am unlikely to forget)
