Its the same thing as a battery, except the difference is that when a battery stores its charge, the electrons introduced cause a chemical reaction to happen that changes the mixture inside the battery, while a capacitor (in very general terms), is more like a charge collector like you would get by walking with slippers on a carpet in the winter. The electrons just get bunched up on one side without modifying any of the chemistry.

It is basically simple.

Same sign charges hate each other and repel the others. In electronics, the electrons move so electrons hate other electrons and wants to be as far as possible from the others. (electric charge repelling each other).

Now electrons can only move along the wire, unless you overcharge the wire then you get an arch.

When you put a battery on the wire then all electrons are forced one way. No matter how much they hate each other, the voltage pushes them together to one plate until they cant go any further. However the charge (yelling) of the other electrons is heard by the electrons at the other plate and in terror they start to flee away from the plate. When electrons run away screaming, that plate has a lack of electrons and thus becomes more positive charged.

also handy hint did you know that when AC is passed though an Capacitor current it will phase shift the current from the Voltage by 90 Degrees - pass it though a coil bam 90 degrees again - don't talk about that too much but its secret Alien knowledge - the Autistic humans aren't allowed to know. lol
