It can be a strain at times, but the key is to take a step back and ask yourself if it's really worth it getting emotionally invested in some idiot's opinion on a random website. There are idiots everywhere in life, and you alone are responsible for how you let yourself react.
Besides, there've been times when I've gone into a conversation like that with one very clear impression and, because I didn't escalate the situation, ended up having a real discussion and leaving with new information and/or my mind changed. Reddit would be a far better place if everyone tried doing that.

it doesnt matter. reddit is finished. i predict that, by the end of 2015, the vast majority of users will have migrated away to other sites.
i will never visit reddit again.
reddit is a website that has turned to liquid shit over the past two years, and the sooner its dead the better.

I still visit for smaller subreddits where the SRSness can't really be stuck in as well, like Justrolledintotheshop, various tech subreddits (sysadmin, talesfromtechsupport, programming, programmerhumor, etc) and other things where the censorship can't be applied and will probably never make it into there. If it did, the communities would quickly run to a new site.

Why reddit is dying 101...
Mod that mods an insane number of subreddits, that no human could possibly ever do a decent job moderating (yet somehow always has enough time to get into petty squabbles in mod mail)?
Check.
Mod who responds to reasonable requests and discussion with sheer pettiness and douche baggery?
Check.
Mod who shits all over another mod and threatens to immediately quit when challenged even slightly?
Check.
Mod who power trips and simply resorts to banning when they cannot articulate their argument because they know their argument is shit?
Aaaaand Check.

Now repeat that for the admins—especially cupcake is an extreme example—and you know why there is little hope of recovery.

Reddit isn't really dying. It's growing quite rapidly and has become the 10th most visited site in the US and 27th in the world acording to Alexa.

When I said "dying"I meant it in a more colloquial sense. I've referred to reddit as a "walking corpse" compared to what it used to be. It might look good in terms of alexa numbers, but the prime userbase of reddit is primed to leave, because of all of the bullshit that's going on. When that happens, the site will die from the inside out. The same way Digg died. It will take several years, but it'll happen.

Exactly, I think we should set straight an implicit/informal manifesto as a community to keep ourselves open and civilized as far as possible and shun on any powertrip-like behavior

Implementing a system wherein users are able to hold mods in check would be a huge start. That's one of the major problems with reddit. The community is forced to be accountable to the mods, but the mods aren't accountable to the community.
A group of renegade mods can worm their way into a community, completely blow it up or change it totally, driving out or marginalizing all of the original members of said community. Look at places like subredditdrama, creepyPMs, or offmychest for pretty classic examples.

I want to make it clear that /u/drumcowski has continually responded appropriately and helpfully during this, and I had some additional communication with him that I won't share to avoid embroiling him in drama. He also voluntarily reversed the ban /u/ManWithoutAModem rather vindictively created--not that I intend to participate in that subreddit, having had such a bad experience there.

Someone remind me, I recognize the name ManWithoutAModem from somewhere, I feel like he was in (at least) one other major story recently. Anyone got anything?
