I once "stole" my way into buying a thick stack of a band's audio CDs, a live performance DVD, tickets to two concerts and a bunch of concert merchandise. They sure got put in the poorhouse by me previewing their stuff before shelling out. No doubt they're begging on the street as I pre-order every new release.
What's even more horrifying is the way one person I know works in publishing... They were at a convention, and actually had someone come up to them and say they pirated one of their books and loved it so they had to buy every book that publisher put out. Oh noes. Teh horrorz.
Just look at HBO for a prime example of piracy's destructive effects on creative industry. They're so damaged that they say they aren't worried about pirates, that it expands their business. Watch how the piracy drove them into bankruptcy as everyone downloaded Game of Thrones, then bought up subscriptions to HBO Now as fast as it hit the market in their area. It's just awful, watching these quality artists starve to death from the burden of explosive sales.

I wish I didn't click this -_- not because it worked, but because it was a complete and total utter waste of time. I want my two and a half minutes back. Thank fuck I decided to start skimming instead of the thorough perusal I usually give. But look, I know you can't exactly get everything out of a document by doing that--it's just that, there was never any part of the document wherein it seemed like it actually STARTED. As in, the whole thing read like an introduction, words words words but no MEANING. Then I finally got to the examples, of what all this hubbub was about.
...
wat. What exactly about this is supposed to leave me 'speechless'...? This is what the big deal is about? Fucking hell.
Stop crying wolf, little boy. (Not directed at you, @Teeder , but at the article.)
Ugh.
You know, people who have the means DO buy the music, but the biggest thieves in the whole system are the labels themselves, skimming off THE MAJORITY OF THE GROSS INCOME and then leaving the artists with chump change! The problem here is that THOSE greedy motherfuckers assume that we all think like THEY do. THEY wouldn't pay for something they could steal even if they could afford it, so they assume WE would. That's what's going on here. They think everyone is Donald Trump in disguise. Well I'll tell you WHAT. No wall of text print ad is ever going to 'get through' to the Donald Trumps of the world.

Which is why, as a composer/producer, I won't buy from or otherwise have ANYTHING to do with the major labels. They are scum, pure and simple.

I didn't know TorrentFreak was owned by Buzzfeed. TIL
