The internet isn't really any one invention. It's just a bunch of computers (read: most computers) connected up to each other. Any claim to the invention of the internet is highly spurious.
Even if it was that simple that's hardly an invention of anything. In any case, there's a blurry line between connecting two networks together, and adding new computers to the network.
The US had a big part in inventing the Internet, but the one who took the final step and put the World Wide Web online was a British scientist working for a Swiss research institute.
