Gimp? Malware? Maybe if they downloaded it from one of those download sites that puts malware in their installers. gimp.org/downloads It's not quite as nice as Photoshop, but almost as powerful. They're both raster programs and both will do what you need well. It probably doesn't matter much if you've never used either one. I use GIMP because I'm too cheap to buy and don't feel like pirating PS. (and it works on my linux systems too)

I use Photoshop (CS5) for my pixel art and Blender for my models.

Most of my artwork comes from a card game and was already done in Photoshop. I made additional assets in Photoshop simply because that's what I know.

All of my models need to be precise as each pixel is 0.1 meters in world-space. I was able to quickly build very precise models after learning some shortcuts for precision work in Blender.
