It doesn't seem to be that much money. He hired his wife's company to do work for his campaign and she got paid because of it, as someone who works for a business does.

Hiring of family members should be met with scruitiny. However, assuming that both were qualified to be hired as far as their skills and expertise go, that's not a lot of money. That isn't paying a full time wage. Contrasted with the opening of the article citing another well known politician who paid their family member $481,000. That number raises my eyebrow a bit more...
