food wasn't manufactured in factories. there was less food around and it costed far more. food science didn't really exist as we know it. common preservatives of the time were salt, sugar, and lime (for some canning and pickles etc).
Only a rich person could find the leisure time and money to be fat. So, in the Victorian era fat women came from wealthy families and were desirable. Sun tans were also for common field hands and low-class women. So yeah. Pale and fat land whales. Tumblr from 2015 would be creaming themselves.
