The folks that live on the dry side of the island have issues with wind stress, deforestation, grasses going dormant during dry seasons and animals being dehydrated. Goats and donkeys can thrive in this environment without special care but the Angus that the ranchers prefer overstress the landscape because they need more graze because the dry grass is less nutritious and even more graze to fulfill their moisture needs. These dry pastures are mostly being abandoned here but some small holders are switching to small Dexter cattle with success.
Dry pastures need trees to create little moisture sanctuaries and also to serve as forage when the grass goes dormant in the dry season.
So plant trees and do goats.

You never know what the weather will be. You could get a really wet year even in the higher latitudes. During the marauder minimum, pastures deteriorated so badly in many places that people switched to making sillage out of forest forage. We are coming into a solar minimum now so I hope people will remember the old ways and know what to do.
