They watch the hex variables change as inputs and outputs occur. I'm talking about just getting the compiled code and reading it like you'd read coding language.

VP of Tech here. You are correct. Most programmers can't do this...including me, and obviously the guy you are arguing with. But this is part of the core skill set of computer engineers. You absolutely can reverse engineer this stuff given the right people, tools, and time.
