The Ngandu "were familiar with the concept" of homosexual behavior, "but no word existed for it and they said they did not know of any such relationships in or around the village.

So it does exist they just don't have a name for it.

No, the article claims they are aware that it exists, but not in their village.

Pretty sure this is how homosexuality has been viewed hundreds of years ago. "Oh that doesn't happen here!"

I've even talked to old people who claim homosexuality wasnt around when they were young

Reminds me of Putin saying there are no gays in Russia.

Yes, but with Putin there is an ulterior moral motive, because he believes homosexuality is depraved, whereas these people (at least according to the claims in this article) do not.

Given all this, the Hewletts conclude, "Homosexuality and masturbation are rare or nonexistent [in these two cultures], not because they are frowned upon or punished, but because they are not part of the cultural models of sexuality in either ethnic group.

So it's not that they don't exist, it's just that it's rare. The tribesmen may say they don't masturbate but how is that verified? A lot of people will say they don't masturbate even though they're strumming one out daily

Obviously any claims related to sexuality should be taken with a grain of salt. It's an interesting topic, however, especially the relation of genetics to homosexuality. The Aka are an interesting subject in human sexuality because according to these studies, they have far fewer taboos than typical western views on sex. As for masturbation, I find the claims hard to believe, but even if I were to accept that the adults see no need to masturbate because they have sex, what about the teens? Anyways, I just thought it was an interesting article, and maybe someone has more insight into this.

Definitely an interesting article. The fact that one tribeswoman said she's too scared to have sex now because of how many babies she's lost was pretty telling. Sex is fun obviously but it's serious business for them.

Thanks for the article.

I can understand that if a married couple is having sex multiple times a night, masturbation might be a foreign concept. But what about single people? Teenage boys? What do people who are not married do? Is sex common among non-married couples as well? I assume so, but it's not really discussed in the article.

Exactly! These are the points I'm interested in too. It's a shame they were not discussed. I wonder if there are more in depth studies somewhere?

Send Richard Simmons over there. They'll come around.

I don't think Richard Simmons is going to turn anybody gay.
