EPA should fix this without the stipulation.

True but they have to protect themselves these people will just keep demanding more and more as time goes on. Atleast they are offering a settlement so what if it comes with the "you can't sue us for more later" clause

I'm not sure if you're being ironic...

They deserve to live in a place devoid of the governments actions. It was forced upon them, therefore need to be compensated so that they can get back to normal. Just like any insurance policy=treaty.

Of course they are going to try to pay as little as possible. That is the logical thing. The government isn't going to pay a higher price when they can take advantage of people who don't know any better and pay less. They did it door to door so they would be met with little opposition. Good for them for not falling for it.

That's pretty surprising, because agreements between Native Americans and the United States have worked out so well historically.

Apparently the blanket thing was all fabrication. http://quod.lib.umich.edu/p/plag/5240451.0001.009/--did-the-us-army-distribute-smallpox-blankets-to-indians?rgn=main;view=fulltext and if it did happen it was the British that did not Americans.

Just look up State v. United States. It's quite common for things like that to happen at all levels.

Why don't they just set up water treatment systems downstream from the mine? Heavy metals aren't hard to treat at all, you just pump the water through some organo-clay filters and you're good to go.

It's an idea but probably unrealistic in practicality. government is always slow to action with so many hoops to jump through.
