To signal to others that they are health conscious even though their every other actions suggest otherwise. It lazily conveys the same sentiment as "but I eat a salad and 500 calories a day and still gain weight!" to others

It reminds me of how work thought I was cheating because I regularly get 20k steps and most of the people in the fitness challenge couldn’t get 5k daily. They were all obese and wanted to get leaner.
I guess it’s good to know how far you’ve got to go in life but these people never seem to want to change.

I've seen them in fitbits, apple watches etc and they're always far too tight.

Fitbit is for noobs and dilettantes. When I was shopping for a reasonably priced fitness tracker, fitbit didn't even have onboard GPS which is why I went with Garmin. The only thing that fitbit does better than Garmin is sleep tracking which explains why fats love them!
