While the term is mostly just used so it's gender neutral and saves any unnecessary/unwanted explanation, I think the term should be used whenever two people decide to be monogamous. This amount of time varies all the way from immediately to never for depending on exactly who is involved..

I perfer the term "partner" and once it feels like we really are in it together

Partner has been used so often by gay and lesbian couples that when I hear some say that I immediately think of that
