retro-gamer is a bit of a misnomer as it sounds like you're sitting in a basement with an old Sears VGS Atari 2600 rip-off system.

maybe not atari, but surely it's no term for someone who started playing (or plays games) from this millenium

I don't have much to add to the rant/discussion, I just wanted to let you know you're not alone. I do not care about graphics at all. I'm more of a Super Nintendo era fan, and the only respite I've found from modern gaming is the selection of indie games available with "The Binding Of Isaac" or "Gunvolt" being great examples of what I'm going for in a game, something I can play, advance in, and put down when I need to.

Also, I don't get the whole achievements thing and never will. I cannot really relate to the SJW MMORPG experience, my few excursions into MMORPGs have been mostly solo. I only work with others when I need to, and then usually as a silent tank or healer, or in a PvP team with people I know IRL.

Now that I think about it, perhaps I do have something to add: is it possible that with gaming becoming accepted culturally as a pass time activity, people who clung to "gaming" as a pillar of their identity have adopted an elitist outlook to seperate them from the "normal casual non-special person who happens to play games"? Years ago if you were a "gamer" you partook in a less common hobby, nowadays it could be seen as common as calling yourself a "tv watcher" unless you're a super competitive elitist.

....or maybe it's a bunch of NEETS with nothing else to live for.

I agree on the achievements, I never really saw the point to them.

If you look back at some of the older stuff that was impressive in games, often times it was stuff you were not intended to do. Such as getting to a hard to reach area, or killing an enemy in an unconventional manner, etc...

Now it seems like they are there for the purpose of being there; and go from one difficulty extreme to the other. (And for banning cheating in singleplayer; thanks Blizzard!)

I honestly cannot understand the obsession that people have with computer specs and graphics as if anything has changed in the last 5 years. I've got a decent PC but I have no idea what to play on it because any PC gaming community will be spending their entire time talking about graphics cards or laughing at console players for 30 fps locks and never actually talking about video games. Anything on PC gaming magazines or websites is either a multiplat or some early access kickstarter garbage. It's disgusting

Try bioshock, it'd run fine on your pc (no promises for Infinite), and it's a really deep, engaging series.

No flashy achievements for the casual gamers though :P

There's always assholes but the cool thing is that you can just ignore them. Some one in your party whining about some PC bullshit? Just stop playing with them. And when a great game is being attacked for not being egalitarian enough or some similar crap show your support and buy it. Having better games and game forums starts with you.

You sound just like a person that grew up enjoying games should. Just continue enjoying your games and don't give two shit about the 'community'. I don't want to get too sociological here, but let's just say this whole new generation of gamers, internet identities, opinionated bringers of truth is suffering from a major case of compensating for the lack of meaning, a direction. The world is a very confusing place these days, as it should be, a major technological breakthrough happened, it takes a while for the human mind to catch up. Entitlement and excess of material wealth are a real thing my friend. Be grateful for every game you enjoy because you're having fun with it or are getting something meaningful out of (This war of mine & Papers please come to mind). Never apologize for having fun @30fps. Never measure fun in frames per second or number of pixels. It suck when your multiplayer community gets tainted by narcissistic idiots, but c'est la vie. Move on, find fun again, be sure those people won't and they will envy you for it.

It's hard to blame the mainstream gamer in all this much too. There's a lot of subtle mind control at work, be it from publishers, graphic card, CPU and computer manufacturers in general, 'honest' IT media ect ect... But that too will pass, for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction.

I was just completely bewildered. Who plays games for achievements?

Millenials.

These are the marks of millenials, infinite in number and even more in the desire of meaningless accords.

Playing games, and admitting you enjoy playing games, is becoming more socially acceptable for better or worse. Combine that with lots of interconnectivity via MMOs and social media, it's easier than ever to find people that make you think "WTF are you smoking?", especially when you delve into zero barrier-to-play games like WarFrame. I'm in my late 30s and friend, this stuff isn't new, but its just becoming more obvious and easier to see. It's only going to get worse, so brace yourself.

As for assholes thinking they know better, these SJWs aren't the first, and they won't be the last. From the 1950s with McCarthyism and Elvis-being-too-sexy-to-show-below-the-waist-on-tv, to the 60s with the Comic Code Authority, 70s where Dungeons and Dragons turning children into devil worshipping acolytes, the 80s with the "Moral Majority" and the crusade against "inappropriate" music (fuck you Tipper Gore), assholes have been trying to tell others how to have fun for decades, and that's just recently in the US. Now a new generation of narcissistic, authoritative know-it-alls want to exert their control, and tell people how to enjoy themselves and what and how to think. It's just important to remain firm, stay confident in your beliefs, and don't let the fuckers get you down.

P.S. Just wait another 10-20 years when these assholes are running for office. That'll be fun times. I hope you're registered to vote and remember to vote in local elections regardless of whatever your political affiliation is.

One of the things that you have to realize is that among gamers, particularly PC gamers, and particularly online PC gamers, the incidence of autism is astoundingly higher than in the general population. Social graces are going to be difficult to come by.

I am only semi-shitposting.
