I prefer sandbox games. The games I've put the most hours in (and currently play every other day) are Minecraft (modded) and Terraria. I also recently bought ARK: Survival and have been enjoying that as well.

I really connect to inventory in a game. This usually puts me in a party based RPG range from old final fantasy, to KOTOR 1 and 2, to pirate and space trading sims. I like an economy to manage, and a lot of things to buy. This is one aspect I like in most MMORPGs, but it seems there's often a lot of inventory I can't use. Interestingly, RTS games scratch this itch for me in a way I can't describe.

I suppose this isn't limited only to indie games, but I like games that don't battle for control with me as a player. In other words, I like games that allow me as much agency as possible. So for example, I really don't care for unnecessary cut scenes. In fact, I believe that designers/writers should try to make their games with as close to zero cut scenes in the game as possible. I always believe if you're going to take away control from me as a player, it should be meaningful. To give an example, if I can't control my character, then it should probably mean that the player character is bound or can't move for some reason. Sometimes I feel like some developers would be better off making a movie than a game.
