A list I’d take a look at is the Newbery Medal winners and honorees, especially in the early days. This award was for ‘distinguished contribution to American literature for children’. They include books about the rise and greatness of Western Civilization like ‘The Story Of Mankind’ by Hendrik Willem van Loon. Books about pioneers and frontiersmen like ‘Davy Crockett’ by Constance Rourke and ‘Daniel Boone‘ by James Daugherty. It looks like they were corrupted in later years like all our other institutions so I’d be wary with the more recent books.

The list can be found here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newbery_Medal

Looks like someone else has already suggested ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ and ‘Hardy Boys’, I second those.

Redwall series by Brian Jacques, I enjoyed the shit out of that when I was his age. The badgers are bad ass!

The Boxcar Children set was another I enjoyed also.

Redwall is a new one to me. Boxcar I may have in the attic somewhere and had forgotten about it. Thanks.

Thank you, he loved C.S.Lewis and Tolkein too. Can I ask if you have a preferred version of the Arthurian legends? I don't want to spoil him yet with the new Netflix adaptation.

If your boys like dogs, Red Fern and Old Yeller will be tough, but lessons in love and loss for a boy and his dog. Jack London books are great ones for boys and dogs.

Just thought of Kipling's Kim and Stevenson's Treasure Island as great colonial spy and pirate books.

The Once and Future King by T.H. White. Disney used it for their 1950's (60's?) A Sword in the Stone animated movie.

I want to say I read that one in 5th or 6th grade.

Looks quite grim for his age, but I'll give it a go.
