iOS and later Android which were built from the ground up to not be equal to those other systems but to only consume and present information.
That… isn’t brought up very often. It’s entirely dependent on ease of use, particularly for the first few years, but you’re definitely right that the earliest iterations of these devices were only created with rudimentary ability to produce, rather than to consume. Communication–and the ease with which it’s facilitated–became easier with mobile devices, of course. You can’t discount that. But creation became harder. Participation in a richer communications environment became harder. Only now are we seeing this be fixed, even on phones, with advances in hardware. TV shows are being shot on iPhone now, because the lens and sensors are good enough for that. The footage can even be cut and processed, to an extent, on them or on a neighboring iPad. Artwork finally has a canvas–tablets–and software powerful enough to create things at or better than desktop level. But there were several long years where there was a “gap,” and that gap allowed for a redefinition of the way that the vast majority of people interact with the installed technology base.
And since they were not conducive to be used with email, message boards, other decentralized services that hundreds of thousands of different people hosted
Wait, they’re great for that.
to tailor their presentation
I find it interesting–and infuriating–that Steve Jobs created the iPhone to be a full-functioning device because he hated the “mobile internet,” but the rise of Android caused dumbed-down “mobile sites” to explode in popularity.
ultimately be the exact, same, stagnant thing as these dumb "smart" devices with no true innovation in the last 13 years (higher resolution, bigger screen sizes, different display technology, faster processors, etc).
BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT AUGMENTED REALITY IS NEXT! AND THEN VIRTUAL REALITY! DIVE INTO A FANTASY WORLD SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO FACE REALITY! ACTIVATE NIGHTMARE VISION!
The reality is that there is no obsolescence in use unless the software made for it is flagged to only support a particular operating system version, ultimately for no reason, and will just stop working.
Well, the reason is always minimum hardware requirements. Otherwise yeah. I had a first-gen iPhone, then an iPhone 6 (7 years later), and… I still have it. Can’t see myself switching away from it until the battery dies (fuck lithium ion), particularly since I don’t use it for anything but as a phone. But I’ve always been like that. “Use it until it breaks” is how I was raised. No sense in wasting currency on new.
Something that was unheard of when it came to PCs, as you could expand on a platform decade for decade by just upgrading the components of the device at your choosing.
Fucking sick to death about how computers have become fashion accessories. Goddamn soldered M.2 sticks and RAM chips. It’s only going to get worse, because ARM is now good enough to completely replace X86 (and it WILL, within 5 years. There won’t be any consumer X86 computers on the market.) It’s just easier to make SoC than it is to care about a user’s desires.
The generation that attained cognizance after 2007 knows no other way and I think that dooms us.
I’m not sure why you want to tell all this to your niece, though. How old is she?

13.
This was my autistic breakdown to her saying she wanted to save up for a PS4 to play Fortnite with her boyfriend.
I've also offered some variation of the argument when people say a kid is "so smart with computers, how they can navigate around a tablet so quickly and easily, it baffles me".
I know, it's not the audience that needs to hear it. Arguably it falls on the same deaf ears as 23 year old me disregarding and disrespecting my Uncle Don (who worked for Apple and the education outreach/evangelism in California in the 90s where he would go to schools and assist IT departments) because he completely poo-poo'd the idea of playing any video games, at any time. "Why not spend that time to do something more useful." He meant the Bible, but I should've read between the lines. I should've been more on top of things out of high school but I let the world have its way with me and I don't know what to do to prevent others from doing the same.
Wait, they’re great for that.
Well, I always found posting on a phpbb, punbb, mybb, etc board to be a pain to do on early generation iPhones. Even more painful than, say my Blackberry. Maybe that's where I'm mistaken but that's where I'm saying the Reddits, Facebooks, Twitters of the world took dominance and by the time we got devices that handled full-sized pages better, those niche communities had died. You didn't have to navigate around to niche places for each subject and they had interfaces tailor made for the input, which is why UI/UX is such a sacred cow, their developers as holy priests and priestesses of the SJW cult within these companies.

The compromises are so weird, too. Like, I have this cheap laptop that everyone who reviewed it agreed it was a solid piece of work for the price it was, a Motile 141. Processor is a Ryzen and is completely dependent on dual channel memory... they give one RAM slot. At least we got a RAM slot? And while they cut the board to allow for 2.5" sata there's no connectors for it BUT there are two M.2 connectors to have two SSD drives.
I guess arbitrary limits have always been around, for example I have a G4 tower I just pulled out to get some files off of and it has 4 RAM slots but regardless of the type of RAM that can fit the slots the EFI limits it to 1.5GB no matter the combination and there's really no way around it. It just feels so stupid that there's so much out there that could have so much life left in it and instead, governor plates.

13... ...boyfriend… …PS4… ...Fortnite...
MFW. Yeah, okay. I get it now.
prevent others from doing the same
I mean, I applaud your initiative. I’ve been out of touch with the kiddos for a long time now and didn’t have a “standard” childhood myself… Thirteen… does she have any other hobbies? Feminine ones? She’s at the age where she’ll want to rebel against the world; what better way than to make her realize how “self sufficient” she can be–not as a “strong woman who don’t need no man,” but rather–as a traditionalist woman who can cook, sew, manage a household, and gets a squoombly in her wombly whenever she thinks of future children?
Fortnite was created as an addiction facilitator to farm whales for cash. She doesn’t know this, nor would she care about it. But she’s at the age where she would (or should) start to be caring about the kind of boys she spends her time with. It’s a good time to hijack her desires to get her to understand “If this is the kind of interaction he wants to have with you now, he’s not going to be there to provide you with a deeper relationship when you want more out of him.”

Can you reply to this comment so that I can remember to reply in the morning? I know that it may be an unusual request.
