We're all crazed nutjobs who fell for that whole constitutional "shall not be infringed" thing, that's how.
Safety classes are a great idea and I don't regret having [voluntarily] taken one. It was mostly super obvious stuff, but I still don't regret it. Making it compulsory sounds kind of like an infringement to me, but as previously stated, I'm clearly a nutjob.

I don't see a safety class as something that prevents you getting a gun. They should make it free or fairly cheap to be sure everyone can afford it. You probably already know that "It was mostly super obvious stuff" is not always very obvious for the average person, as the average person is fairly stupid. If you saw the hoops I have to get through in my country to get a gun.... I wish i'd just have to attend a safety class.

Quick note, that doesn't include pistols!
To possesses a pistol you must take another more advanced class
and follow these rules
You must pass the additional safety course (the CRFSC).
They must be be registered.
You must follow special "Storage, Display, Transportation and Handling" requirements.
You may not carry them on your person.
You may own them for target shooting, or collecting.
You may shoot them at approved ranges, not on your own property.
You will likely need to join a shooting club.
There are exceptions to every item on this list.
Don't worry though.
You'll probably be denied anyway

This is what (((they're))) going for here right now. It's the short term goal, and it'll only get worse from there if they get what they want.
On a side note, this is why I'm against CCW. It's a huge cope, and only fudds support that shit. The moment you need a loicence for that sort of thing, you are implicitly agreeing that the government owns you. Your life is not your own, that's why you can't do certain things to protect it without their permission.
In Canada, I learned that their equivalent of a CCW here is called an ATC -- Authorisation To Carry.
Wanna know how many ATCs were active specifically for protection of life in all of Canada? As of 2018, two. Just two.
https://www.rgsl.ca/only-two-atcs-protection-of-life-canada-wide/
The CA government decided only two people could take charge of their own lives, and gave them permission.
This is the form to get an ATC: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/wam/media/3625/original/db5cc4ee5bc4f1915fef38b40a57fa19.pdf
Read through it and tell me you can't imagine the same thing being brought to America. It's not the most far-fetched notion given the current state of affairs.
