I have done "work" at almost all of them as a DOE contractor. Amazing, even to me.
“The foundation of quantum networks rests on our ability to precisely synthesize and manipulate matter at the atomic scale, including the control of single photons,”
Fermi labs, outside Chicago has a "particle accelerator", just like CERN, (except smaller).

Just like in the 1970s and 80s when we first heard about this coming "internet" thing, there was no way any of us could have predicted the far-reaching impact it would have on our lives.... same with Quantum Internet. I don't pretend to fully understand how it works, but having read several articles on it and still not being fully informed (Quantum computing is a strange and spooky concept), none of us can predict what the future will look like.
Decades ago there was a cutting-edge movie called "Forbidden Planet." Based loosely on Shakespeare's "The Tempest", it had at the time a lot of special effects and concepts that today we would find quaint and laughable. As good as it was in 1956, they could not have predicted transistors, wireless comms, and computing as we know it today.
Same with Quantum Internet... Today we're living in a "Forbidden Planet" world with clunky technology that too often doesn't work and we can't imagine how this will change our lives. Interesting, OP, thanks.
Quantum Internet (this is HUGE!)
"In February of this year, scientists from DOE's Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois, and the University of Chicago entangled photons across a 52-mile 'quantum loop' in the Chicago suburbs, successfully establishing one of the longest land-based quantum networks in the nation." In other words, instantaneous communication is now possible using what Einstein called "spooky action at a distance". No antenna required. It doesn't "transmit" in the conventional sense. The distant photon changes its spin direction to match that of the local photon. They mirror each other at any distance apart!
