It is a complex answer you are better looking up your self. The hydrogen is often "Deuterium" which is Hydrogen with an extra Neutron, these extra neutrons are broken off the "Deuterium" and become "fusion fuel" with the rest of the nuclear material to trigger more fusion/fissions depending on the goal.
