In 2011 we had a nasty earthquake in Christchurch I became quite interested in why people react in such differant ways in situations like this after seeing those reactions first hand and some of the weird thoughts that cross your mind. For example the first thing I thought when I saw somebody who was bleeding from the head with their eyeball hanging out of their eye-socket was "If the zombie apocolypse started now I wouldn't be able to tell zombies from earthquake victims." The rest of my thoughts were more sane and rational, but that moment will always stick with me.
Well I went off on a tangent there, sorry about that.
This is why it is important to learn basic things, like first aid and CPR. You may not know exactly what to do, but for god sakes, do something.
You can hold someone hand, you can talk to them. You can apply pressure, stabilize their head. You don't have to be an EMT, Firefighter, nurse or doctor to do these things.
Having something to focus on and do helps stave off panic, for both you and the people around you. You do not have to have the big picture, just know enough to make your next decision/action something other than inaction.

If anyone is interested in these sorts of events there is a great book called The Unthinkable: Who survives when disaster strikes - and why. There is a chapter on fires and one on crush events.
