It's a post modern thing. Modern narratives are only partly about story and a lot about self reference to the medium of film itself. Actors carry the weight and pull of their familiarity into their roles as a subconscious hook to the audience to feel like they're participating in a bigger adventure than just the movie's plotline itself, i.e. the actor's career trajectory.

Known actors get more asses in seats. Movies dont need established celebrities it just helps make more money.
