My bf is in his 70s and is exactly like that - crap diet, major sweet tooth, but insanely active. Has a six pack, not an ounce of fat on him, ripped. It's just CICO; he burns way more than he consumes, despite his diet. I'm certainly not saying exercise is useless, but for your average person who's going to go to the gym and hop on the elliptical for 45 min, it's just not making that much of an impact for the effort compared to skipping a snack and swapping soda for water.

What's cico? I'm pretty sure I am genetically different than most people because I can work out and lift heavy every every single day without ever getting sore or needing rest days. Most people can't do this especially people my age.

You're only 43..

Calories in vs calories out, basic concept of fat loss. You consume more than you expend and you gain (excess energy is stored as fat for easy future access), and vice versa. If you're truly a genetic wonder and the laws of thermodynamics don't apply to you, you should be researched; that'd be fascinating to look into.

CICO means Calories In, Calories Out. If the two are equal, your weight will remain constant. If calories in exceeds the calories you burn, then you gain weight. And obviously, if calories coming in is lower than what you burn, you lose weight.

Even with a terrible diet, you can still maintain a healthy weight as long as you don't go overboard on the amount you eat.

I'm not saying exercise plays no role. It does burn calories and it has countless health benefits, so I would highly recommend it, but it's not really the driving factor for weight control. You can't outrun your fork if you're sucking in food like a black hole.
