It looks like death data for 2019 is not yet available. Have you tried cdc wonder?

When is the "flu season" ?

Numbers go flu deaths 80,000 - 2017-18

So the "season" must be off from the actual year

Yeah, tried to find that info and was unable. I'm sure it's still out there, anyone know where?

Yes, they are clearly organizing their data in ways that you can't show what is going on instead of just giving us all the data.

Arguably the hospitalization rate, and hospital capacity levels, is more important than the death rate, because if that goes over-capacity the death rate will rise. But I've never seen that data published except in snippets about particular areas.

That isn't useful. They emptied the hospitals for awhile delaying procedures. The hospitals should be filling up the capacity from those cases.

Well, that's just it. How much excess capacity is there? How much is in use? Without those numbers and looking at their trends there's no way to make an intelligent decision.

The idea of "flattening the curve" is arguably sound, but the more you flatten it the longer it gets. Ideally you'd want to allow for infections up until the point where the hospitals fill up. Otherwise you're locking down forever.
